A Tale of Unexpected Guests

Surprise Visitors: Where do they come from? One day we had 9. On another day there were 7.

It all began on a seemingly ordinary day. As we gazed out at our backyard swimming pool, we noticed something unusual –something moving in our pool. As we approached, I saw frogs swimming in our inground pool. Initially, their presence was a mystery. Where had they come from? Why had they chosen our pool as their newfound oasis?

A Rescue Mission: Armed with a net and a determined spirit, we embarked on a mission to rescue these tiny creatures from their unwitting aquatic escapade. Despite our best intentions, the frogs seemed unfazed by their brush with danger, often swimming away until exhaustion set in. Of course, the frogs don’t realize that they are being saved. Saving them was a gesture of goodwill; they could get pulled into the filter, or drown when they don’t have a place to rest. After some unsuccessful efforts to catch them,  we gently scooped them out of the water and placed them in the safety of our flower garden.

Not Just for Ring Toss: As we observed the frogs, we discovered their fondness for the pool toys that floated upon the water. They found the perfect resting spots, basking in the sun while using the colorful plastic toys as impromptu loungers.

An Unlikely Encounter: As I took a walk in our neighborhood, I was surprised to see movement, and then frogs by the side of the road in a puddle of water. There was no pond or stream…only a small drain at the edge of a yard. There was barely much water, but somehow some frogs ended up there and seemed to be enjoying this small area at the edge of the grass.

Inspiration for Art:  Inspired by the scenes from our backyard, and by a statue at Longwood Gardens, I created an original oil painting titled "Frog Pond." The painting features a young boy holding a frog, capturing the sense of wonder and exploration that nature instills in children. As a parent, I know firsthand how the outdoors can become a playground for discovery and adventure. I would definitely recommend visiting Longwood Gardens, in Kennett Square, PA. There are beautiful plants and flowers outdoors and in a conservatory.
