Botanical Notes: A Mixed Media Painting Series

I’m excited to share a new body of work, a six-piece mixed media series entitled “Botanical Notes.” Each painting is created on an 8" x 10" wood panel, layering acrylic paint with photographic elements of natural leaves, along with subtle marks, script, and textures.

This series grew out of my fascination with the quiet poetry of nature. Leaves hold stories of growth, change, and resilience — and when paired with traces of handwriting and musical notation, they suggest a dialogue between the organic world and human expression.

The Inspiration Behind the Series

“Botanical Notes” is a play on words — notes as in music and notes as in written messages. This series explores how nature carries memory, rhythm, and song, much like a melody unfolding across time. Each piece is both a visual and lyrical impression, where leaves and layered marks become part of an ongoing conversation between the natural world and human expression.

The palette is intentionally soft and natural, with muted neutrals, touches of blue, earthy browns, and the occasional warm glow. Layers of paint, transfer, and translucent washes allow the images to drift in and out of focus — much like memories that linger just below the surface.

Titles and Individual Works

Each artwork in the series has its own identity while remaining connected to the collection. (Tap links below to learn more and view images.)

  • Timeless Fan — inspired by the fan-shaped ginkgo leaf, a living symbol of resilience and grace.

  • Ephemeral Leaves — a meditation on the fragile beauty and fleeting presence of leaves in nature.

  • Willow Song — celebrating the lyrical, cascading forms of willow branches.

  • Entwined — interlacing leaves and lines, suggesting connection, harmony, and flow.

  • Nature’s Melody — intertwining leaves, script, and subtle musical notes, reflecting the harmony between the natural world and lyrical expression.

  • (I may be adding additional paintings to this series. The “sixth” one gave me trouble as I attempted to improve it, but perhaps I will create more in the future.)

Viewing the Collection

Each painting carries its own gentle presence when viewed on its own. But when placed together in pairs, trios, or larger groupings, they begin to speak as a chorus — a collection of botanical notes that echo one another across space. Their scale makes them versatile for small spaces or for creating larger wall arrangements with multiple pieces.

Closing Thoughts

“Botanical Notes” is both personal and universal. It reflects my connection to the natural world and my love of layered, mixed-media processes. At the same time, it invites viewers to find their own resonance in the imagery — whether it’s the timeless fan of a ginkgo leaf, the lyrical cascade of willow branches, or the gentle rhythm of leaves drifting across a page like music.

Viewed individually, each painting offers its own quiet voice. Together, the five works form a collective harmony — a series of visual notes that echo memory, rhythm, and song. I’m delighted to share the complete collection, and I look forward to showing how these works can be displayed both on their own and in groupings that highlight their interconnectedness. I hope you enjoy this series, “Botanical Notes”.
